Remington Model 1858 Revolver

A post on the Misssissippi message board suggested that NCOs of a regiment from that state were issued the "Confederate (1840) NCO saber and 1858 Remington New Army .44." Obviously the Remington was a well-made revolver and many would have come into Confederate hands as battlefield captures. But why would such sidearms as these be issued to compay NCOs? Maybe a better question - is there any documentation to support this conjecture?

Searching for Confederate use of this firearm, I came across this reference from "Gone With The Wind". The revolver Rhett Butler gives Scarlett O'Hara on the Jonesboro battlefield is said to be a Remington.
