Clothing of North Carolina Cavalryman 1863

Alexander Biddle, an officer in the 121st Pennsylvania, wrote about the capture of a cavalryman of Lee's army during its retreat from Gettysburg: "One of our men just brought in a cavalry soldier of Stuart's. He said he is of the 5th company of Col. Randall's North Carolina cavalry, was born in New York, is 22 years of age, and been working and living at the gold mines for six years. He said he had a brother in the Union service and wanted to go north. He wore a very good grey cloth jacket and butternut pants, with a large button on his jacket with an I on it."
