Used this Brown Bess is one of Davide Pedersoli’s early guns, the musket is stocked in walnut and marked STOWE – 1776 on the lock. The large flint lock sparks well, and the bore is bright.

Known at the Second Model Brown Bess, the correct title is the Short Land, New Pattern Musket, to indicate the 42" barrel, and heavy duty construction for land troops (Infantry). The earlier Long Land Pattern Muskets had a 46" barrel, and are now called the First Model Brown Bess. Sea Service Muskets were of lighter construction, to be kept in a locker aboard ship, except when used for boarding or combat.

The barrel on this Bess has been allowed to acquire a deep patina to reduce glare; as it sits it would not be proper for a British impression but could be used by a reenactor portraying an American militia member. The barrel could be taken down and polished bright again or left as is depending on the next owners needs.

Weighing in at 9.15 pounds the Bess has a trigger reach of 14” and is well suited for today’s average to larger size shooter.

An older specimen, this Brown Bess musket was made by Davide Pedersoli. The walnut stock has a satin smooth finish, not the high gloss synthetic finish sometimes found on replica guns. Used, the gun has developed a variety of small handling marks over time and one small crack at the front of the buttplate comb extension. The barrel, once armory bright, has been finished brown and the brass furniture has acquired a uniform patina.

The long baluster wrist extends from the toe, to the lock panels. The forend swells at the ramrod entry pipe, forming a bulbous grip for the British soldier. An odd notch occurs between the swell and the forend of the musket, it appears that in an attempt to magnify the swelled grip that the wood forward of it was slightly reduced.

Our top view shows the comb extension of the brass buttplate, tapered comb of the walnut buttstock, and the shield shaped initial plate inlay, behind the flared tang. Interestingly the shield inlay has been installed upside down in an odd quirk. The tang itself is accented by the raised platform upon which it sits. It is in the area of the comb forward of the buttplate extension that the small crack can be seen, running forward on the wood approximately 3/4.”

A wedding band decorates the breech end of the .75 caliber smooth bored 42" barrel, which has developed a dark patina on its once polished Armory bright finish; the barrel has the appearance of being browned as a result.

We can supply the round balls, patches, gun flints, powder, and cleaning supplies you need to load and shoot your Brown Bess Musket.

Our bottom view shows the wide brass buttplate, and matching brass triggerguard. The trumpet shaped brass ramrod pipes carry the military style iron ramrod, with flared tip.

The military style triggerguard is fitted with a sling swivel, for your buff white leather musket sling. The musket is accompanied by a sling, but in this case it is not a buff white sling, rather a brown leather that almost matches the stock in coloration.

The big flint lock is marked STOWE – 1776 and bears the King's Crown and initials GR, a sign that this musket was originally made for English military service.

The lock is polished Armory bright, to match the barrel and has begun to develop the same patina though not yet as much as the barrel. Included with the gun is a brass flash guard that is in the same condition as the other brass furniture on the musket. The cock is fitted with our best #FLINT-ENG-9 English musket flint. Be sure to order a dozen spare flints, sold separately.

From the back of the rifle the long, flat sideplate can be seen. Retained by two lock bolts, the flat sideplate has a tail behind the second bolt. On earlier, and again on later, models the sideplate was convex, and curved a bit above the level of the wood. The later models also did away with the tail of the plate, it simply connected the two bolts and that was it.

We will ship this nice replica, in special foam lined carton. The stock has several very small handling marks, from normal us. The barrel has a brown patina and someone doing a British impression will have to take this down to armory bright, though an American impression could leave it as is. The lock is polished and finished Armory bright, easy to keep in perfect as-new condition, with a bit of hand polishing after each day's cleaning. Prices are going up on new muskets due to the strong Euro, order this nice used musket today!
