Second Lieutenant Charles H. Vandevender (variant Vandiver), commanding Company F of the 7th Virginia Cavalry as of 9 June 1863, was cited by LCol Thomas Marshall for his actions at Fairfield, Pennsylvania on 3 July 1863, against the 6th U.S. Cavalry. Marshall wrote that Vandevender, "who on every occasion is among the foremost, and who at the Fairfield fight, with his double-barrel shot-gun, whipped in single combat three of the foe, shooting one, capturing a second, and putting to flight the third." During the war, Vandevender also used a Navy Colt pistol and Merrill carbine. He lost his right arm in combat. In 1896, Vandevender served in the Missouri State Senate.
