Re: Arkansas Field Officers - Given Names

Captain Wiley C Jones, middle name is Caleb. He is buried in the Smithville Cemetery.
There was Jones who was the Lt. Col of the 8th Arkansas Infantry Battalion, not use if he was the GR Jones in the 45th. Will take some research.

Captain Wiley C Jones, Was first in Coleman's Missouri Cavalry Partisan Rangers. W.O. Coleman was a Captain in the 7th Division Missouri State Guard, He recruited 5 Missouri Companies to Organize them as the 4th Calvary 7th Division, Missouri State Guard, he went to Arkansas and recruited 3 companies under General Hindman's Partisan Ranger orders, including Wiley C Jones, Originally, he was to be the 1st Lieutenant, but at some point Jones was made Captain, and was senior captain of the 3 Arkansas Companies, and was in command of the approximately 100 men, who returned to Arkansas, under orders to wait for orders of transfer to active Confederate service. that is why he was in command of Arkansas men, from a Missouri State Guard Cavalry Regiment. Colonel Coleman, was never able to raise more Missouri Companies to complete the organization. At this time, Price accepted a Confederate Commission, and ordered the Arkansas soldiers to return to Arkansas, and report upon orders to be brigaded with other Confederate Regiments to form a Cavalry Regiment.
Colonel Coleman was supposed to have recruited his State Cavalry to full strength and Hindman, gave Coleman commission as a Colonel. He was supposed to report to General Rains, the 7th MSG Division commander, he failed to report, upon notification by General Rains that Coleman never reported (after ample opportunity) Hindman cashiered Coleman from the Confederate Army and Rains cashiered him from the Missouri State Guard. Coleman then went to work recruiting in Missouri another Partisan Ranger Regiment, making it extremely difficult to determine who was in which Coleman's Regiment without knowing the time frame of the Regiment's organization.

On June 17 1862, 3 Companies of the 5th Illinois Cavalry, who were sent under command of Major AH Seley to prevent Captain Jones and his understrength Arkansas Battalion of approximately 100 men from reporting in northeast Arkansas and they accomplished that mission on the James McKinney farm on the west prong of Osborne's Creek. The 5th Illinois Cavalry captured Captain Jones and 14 of his men. Captain Jones later became a Captain in the 45th Arkansas.
