Re: How did the cavalry fight in Arkansas?

I wanna thank both of you for your help.

My friend and colleague Lawrence Schiller is writing a book about the evolution of cavalry tactics on both sides during the Civil War. To help him out I’ve been attempting to find out what the tactics were like for both sides in all of the states where there was mounted combat.

I can tell you one thing that’s different about Arkansas from Virginia. At the start of the overland campaign on May 5, 1865 for the Cavalry on both sides entrench. Most of the fighting for the rest of the year end for 1865 takes place in the woods so they there are very few mounted fights. In the Shenandoah Valley however most of the area consists of farms and open land so there are a lot of mounted cavalry charges. Here too though the Cavalry does entrench.

In Georgia also During Shermans Atlanta campaign, the cavalry on both sides dig trenches.
