Re: Hughey's Battery
In Response To: Re: Hughey's Battery ()

Hello. I am an ACW enthusiast [I would like to call myself "researcher", but maybe the spurs have to be earned on the field?] from Italy, and this is my first message on this board.
Assuming anyone is still interested in a question eight years old:

Friction-Primers for Cannon.
(omissis)
PACKING.- The tubes are first put up in bundles of 10 each, wrapped in water-proof paper; 10 bundles are packed in a tin box painted or japanned: 100 tin boxes are packed in a box made of 1-inch white pine boards, dovetailed.
The contents of the tin box, place and year of fabrication, are stamped on the lid, and the number of the box marked on the front side. The contents of the wooden box are marked on each end.
Dimension of the tin box: Length, 4.5in.; width, 2.35in.; depth, 2.35in.
[Dimension of the] (interior) wooden box: [Length,] 20.5 [in.; width,] 12.0 [in.; depth,] 9.5 [in.]
Weight of tin box containing 100 primers, .8347 lb.
Weight of wooden box [containing] 10,000 [primers,] 105. [lb.]
[text] = quotation marks in the original.

Source: The Ordnance Manual for the Use of the Officers of the United States Army, Third Edition (1861), Philadelphia, J. B. Lippincott & Co., 1862, pp.298-299 [pdf available on Google Books]. Yes, I noticed that it is a post-Sumter Northern source. But both the First Edition (Washington 1841, pdf as above, pages 210-211) and the Second Edition (Washington 1850, pdf as above, pages 281-283) lacks the "Packing " sub-chapter. The Southern equivalent (The Field Manual for the Use of the Officers on Ordnance Duty, Richmond 1862) is a heavily abridged version and lacks any detail.
Hoping it is of interest.
