Well, I was working off memory and that sometimes can be dangerous. However I have some documentation, when I can put my fingers on it of one of the Pumphrey boys riding with Jonas Webb, a notorious greyback in Saline County. Webb and his crew were known for lynching a few men down in what is now Grant Co. However, John William Pumphrey, formerly of Co K 2nd Ark Inf did indeed desert or galvanize as he joined the 11th KY Cav (US) from prison after being captured at Chickamauga. He was captured Sept 19-20 and enlisted by Oct 9, 1863 and served at least until Aug 1864 per his Union records. I believe that is where I got the desertion info. Berryman did indeed die and F M and a J. pumphrey served in the 11th Ark Inf, and after prison release of regiment, they served in 11 and 17 Consolidated Ark Mounted Inf. F M went back to Ark and served in Poe's Cav Bn which was mainly Saline Co men who were discharged or deserted soldiers previously of the 11th Ark. Poe was their former Major. Records do not show if FM was discharged from 11and17 Ark or if he just went home, but he enlisted in Feb of 64. So not really desertion as such, just a relocation and a new CS unit.
