Re: Camp Sumter, Spring Hill, AR

Here are some references to Camp Sumpter. Note: the 30th Arkansas was in Churchill's brigade of Drayton's Division [previously Gen Price's] at this time.

3/18/64 Kirby Smith Department Hqs to Gen Drayton cdg Camp Sumpter-Send at once all the forces at Camp Sumpter to Shreveport

3/18/64 Camp Sumpter-Gen Drayton cdg Div to Lt Col Belton-As the “body guard” & Col Perkins’ mounted men have been detached from this Division, Lt Col Buster’s Cavalry which remain are inadequate for the needs of the Division. Buster’s morning report calls for 113 rank & file & 86 horses present for duty with only 24 old weapons. Maj Wood has already applied for service with this command & if he is attached, Buster’s Bn’s services could be dispensed with.

3/19/64 Gen Drayton says-this morning 15 men of Buster’s command deserted with their horses, guns & blankets leaving me with 9 of his men with arms. I have no use for unarmed, dismounted, undisciplined troopers. In consequence of the change of movement to Shreveport I must have some mounted men. Division is to leave for Shreveport tomorrow AM
