Mark -- Evening Shade is located in Sharp County (formerly part of Lawrence County), in extreme northern Arkansas (just 10 miles up the road from my old hometown).

Jasper Newton Cardwell is listed in the parole records of the Sub-district of Northern Arkansas at Jacksonport on June 5, 1865. He was a private in Co. D, Freeman's Regiment Missouri Cavalry, who enlisted at Evening Shade (date not stated). His descriptive list states that he was 18 years old, born in Tennessee, eyes blue, hair light, complexion fair, height 5'3". The place of birth is erroneous; the 1850 census of Lawrence County, as well as his obituary, states that he was born in Arkansas.

Co. D, Freeman's Regiment Missouri Cavalry, was an Arkansas company which was recruited Lawrence County and mustered into service at Evening Shade.

There were no Lawrence County companies in Power's 14th Arkansas; Cos. F-G-I of McCarver's 14th Arkansas were recruited in Lawrence County, but, as you noted, by 1863 McCarver's regiment had long been disbanded, with half the companies going to form part of the 21st Arkansas. Whoever wrote his obituary must have been confused.
