The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Pvt Jasper Newton Cardwell

Looking for opinions from you fine individuals:

Jasper Newton Cardwell
born: 7 Aug 1847, Evening Shade, Hempstead, Arkansas.
died: Sep 1929 Seattle, King, Washington

According to Confederate Veteran Magazine (vol.38, pg.29) he enlisted in Company E, 14th Arkansas on 15 Apr 1863.
Since McCarver's 14th was officially the 21st Arkansas by then, it must refer to Powers' 14th.

Of course there is no CSR. And with no CSR, that means no prisoner-of-war or parole record was generated by Federal authorities following the surrender of the unit at Port Hudson, Louisiana.

For me, it seems a bit more than odd that a 15 year-old, with no discernible relative in the regiment would travel across the state and across the Mississippi River to enlist in a regiment at Port Hudson and then be absent at the surrender on July 9.

I have seen a few incorrect units cited in Confederate Veteran Magazine obits, but this is my first one where I suspect possibly fabricated service.
