The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Samuel Lyons of Augusta, AR

Good Afternoon!

I an new to the board and thrilled to learn of its existence and hope that someone may be aware of the individual I am looking for.

I am working with a gentleman in Little Rock on a family history project. His great grandfather was Samuel Lyons, who was born in Lambsheim, Germany in 1824 and immigrated to America as a young man. He lived in Indiana and Kentucky prior to moving to Augusta, Arkansas about 1860. The oldest son was born in March 1860 in Louisville and the next in August 1861 in Augusta.

Family legend holds that Samuel Lyons was a colonel in the Confederate Army and was walked with a cane because of a war wound. Mr. Lyons late father corresponded with Calvin Collier back in the late 60's and Maj. Collier thought that maybe their ancestor was a Samuel Lyons who enlisted in Memphis on June 30, 1863 as a major in General Hardee's staff. This individual served as an engineer for Hardee and according to the information Collier had was in the army for 22 days.

I cannot verify any of this. I can locate a boat load of Samuel Lyons but none that correspond with this Samuel Lyons. I also cannot find the Major Lyons that Collier was referring to. Mrs. Lyons and the children went back to Lousiville at some point. The next child down the line was born in 1864 in Louisville. Lyons was a butcher in Augusta. He is shown in the 1870 census in Louisville, Ky as a butcher and also in tax records for the same year in Augusta as a butcher. Any thoughts?

I did find a Samuel Lyons in the record collection from Fold3.com that sold supplies to the Confederates from Arkansas. I wonder if his service to cause was not of the irregular variety. I hate to shatter the family myth.

Anyway, any ideas you may have would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Cindy Grisham
