Re: McNair takes command of Dockery's Brigade

Not all of them. The reason for the change from Dockery to McNair is not specified in the souces I have reviewed-so far.

There may be a hint in the following extract from the OR's that Dockery was ill or injured. But not enough to state positively.

9/22/64 Kirby Smith to General Greer commanding conscripts...directs that you will order out the Reserve Corps of the State of Arkansas. You will instruct General Dockery that as soon as ready for field service he will report to the district commander for instructions

And, it should be remembered that McNair's date of rank preceded that of Dockery's. As a matter of fact, there were those who had been applying for McNair's promotion to Maj Gen.

Also, I must correct my 2010 post as follows:
In the Fall of 1863, [should be 1864]

And, I have found later references to Dockery's Brigade than the Sept. 15, 1864 date that I posted in 2010.

September 17, 1864 Monticello Hqs to Dockery-Gen Churchill directs that you keep constantly on hand from five to ten days' rations of meal for your whole command, in order that you will be prepared to move at any moment

SPECIAL ORDERS, HEADQUARTERS CHURCHILLS DIVISION, No. 76. Monticello, September 18, 1864. I. In accordance with special instructions from district headquarters, Brigadier-General Dockery’s brigade will be inspected by Capt. H. Fletcher, acting assistant inspector-general, District of Arkansas, this evening at 4 o’clock…
