Re: 32nd Arkansas Infantry Regiment

Following the action at Cotton Plant, General Curtis changed the objective of his invasion from Little Rock, and instead moved to and occupied the Mississippi River port at Helena Arkansas.

I am reading "March to the River" regarding General Curtis's 1862 invasion. This book indicates that Curtis really made the decision not to attempt to take Little Rock, after the Battle of Whitney's Lane. According to this book, The Battle of Cotton Plant really just convinced Curtis to abandon his effort to link up with the Union resupply fleet Clarendon and just move overland to Helena.

That conclusion increases the importance of Whitney's Lane, and also increases the amount of credit due to John Selden Roane. Hindman was not in the picture yet at the time of Whitney's Lane and it was Roane that stopped Parker's Texas Cavalry and sent them north to help slow Curtis's advance.
