Re: Arkansas Units at Iuka, MS
In Response To: Arkansas Units at Iuka, MS ()

We are searching for a descendant of any CSA soldier KIA in the Battle of Iuka. We would like to apply for the VA to place a memorial marker for him in the Goyer Cemetery. The Goyer Cemetery was on the battlefield at the time of the battle, and is still there. It is a small, old, cemetery but still kept up. The Union buried about 100 CSA KIA soldiers on the battlefield.

"In Memory Of" headstones supplied by Veterans Affairs has to be applied for by a descendant. These are for graves whose exact location is not known. I applied, last September, for a group memorial marker for 120 soldiers who died as a result of the Battle of Iuka, but was denied, last week. They only place group memorial markers in a National Cemetery,(which we do not have in Iuka.)

If we can get one VA headstone placed at Goyer Cem., by a descendant, it might open a door for us to get the rest of them marked by Veterans Affairs. This is why we are searching for a KIA in Battle of Iuka, CSA soldiers descendant. I will be happy to supply and application, walk the descendant through the process, and email the application to the VA. We have the CMR's, all we need is a descendant to sign the application. We would place the headstone at Goyer for them. We are just trying to get these soldiers graves marked, they deserve that.

Wishing you all the best in researching the Arkansas units! If I can be of assistance to you, just let me know.
