Batson Cox's command was clearly disbanded by Sep 1861 as the men were enlisting in other units. It looks like roughly 80% of the men came From Johnson County and the remainder from Newton County. In any case, the company was at Fayetteville by July 7.

In his after-action report, McRae says that in the first part of the battle, only 1 company and the first few files of a second company were with him due to horsemen cutting off the rest. Later in the report he says that because of the horsemen, he was without 2/3 of his command until the afternoon.
If 1 1/4 companies were with him, multiplied by three, it works out to about four companies present.

Conventional thinking is that the four companies were originated as follows:

Company A: Men from Benton County.
Company B: Men from Franklin County.
Company C: Men from Franklin County
Company D: Men from Yell County.

That seems like a whole lot of men from Franklin County.

My thinking is that one of the "Franklin County" companies was actually Cox's command, or that McRae, for some reason, did not have all his companies at Wilson's Creek and maybe Cox's troops were detailed in some way. Will have to see if anything further turns up to help clarify the mystery.
