ANNOUNCEMENT: COMING EVENT: October 13, 2015
The Grand Prairie Civil War Round Table Meeting will be held at the Lonoke County Museum in downtown Lonoke at 215 South East Front Street, on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Dr. John H. House, an Arkansas native, who is the Arkansas Archeological Survey Station Archeologist at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, will present a program titled, “Excavating a Civil War Battlefield
Grave at Helena, Arkansas.” The excavation, carried out by a team of archeologists and volunteers, took place in May 2003. The remains are believed to be those of Arkansas Confederate troops commanded by
Brigadier General James A. Fagan at the Battle of Helena on the July 4, 1863. House’s presentation will be accompanied by PowerPoint slides illustrating the excavation and material culture items recovered
from the grave. The remains and accompanying items were reburied in Maple Hill Cemetery in Helena in 2004.
