Captain Cox was quite well along in years, so he may have felt not physically capable of another command. Even so, he feel victim to the degenerating situation in Johnson County in 1864. . . .

Enlisted Jun 1861 at Clarksville. Age at enlistment: 45. Company disbanded Sep 1861. Killed 13 May 1864 in Johnson Co., Arkansas. “Cox was shot at his mill, dragged to his home and thrown on the floor. (Arkansas Gazette)” Born 25 Jan 1804 in Virginia. Age listed as 46 on 1850 Johnson Co., Arkansas Census. Buried in Union Cemetery, Johnson Co., Arkansas. Father of Harvey S., Jasper N. and William B. Cox. Father-in-law of John H. Howard.
