Re: Hawthorn's Brigade-JAJ Shoemaker

James Andrew Jackson Shoemaker 1846-1925 was my great grandfather. His daughter Tressie Shoemaker Prestage 1910-2006 was my grandmother. She said her daddy went twice to war. The first time he was in a walking group and she did think it was in another state. I found that he had family that went to Arkansas and had enlisted in an Arkansas infantry unit. She said when he went the first time he often had no shoes and was always hungry and sometimes had no water to drink. The second time, he went in another mans place in trade for a horse, bridle and saddle. He enlisted with Capt E.D. Gamblin's company of Cavalry, Mabry's Bde, Wirt Adams Cavalry Command. 30Apr1864 at Daws store, Kemper County Ms. He told my grandmother he laid in the line of battle twice. He surrendered May 1865 Scooba, Ms.
