Well, he was originally Captain of Co F 2nd Ark Mtd Rifles and I know he raised his own battalion so the naming may have been influenced by that original service. I always envisioned them more as mounted infantry, at least in their first two major battles they fought alongside infantry units on foot (Oak Hills and Pea Ridge).
