I guess we're talking about Bass Reeves the Oklahoma lawman. He was born a slave in Crawford County, Arkansas in 1838. His owner William Reeves moved to Texas before the war with the family. When the war broke out Williams' son George R. Reeves became a Colonel in the 11th Texas Cavalry. During the war it is said that Bass Reeves and George Reeves parted ways over a fight, and Bass lived with several Indian tribes in Oklahoma Territory until 1865 when the 13th Amendment passed and he was a free man. He married a native Texas girl Nellie Jinny about 1864, they had 10 children and lived in Arkansas and Oklahoma until his death in Oklahoma in 1910. I don't think he was ever an enlisted soldier in the Civil War, but may have ties to the 11th Texas Cavalry through George Reeves in Indian Territory for a very short time if at all.
