Re: Ras Ras Stirman's Regiment Arkansas Sharpshoot

I have been interested in this unit lately and working on an article about it. I am struck by the unit cohesion. It was on of the few remnants of the Arkansas units exchanged after Vicksburg that regained autonomy. It participates in the Camden Expedient, and Prices Raid. At the end of Prices Raid the unit was still cohesive enough to go off and attempt to help with Brooks raid on Fayetteville. The when most of the remnants of Fagan's division either went home on furlough or laying around in Texas recovering, Stirman's unit heads back north and gets involved in the fight at Dardanelle. At the end when most other units just melt away' they march in to Fort Smith and surrender. Stirman probably bears some study as a unit leader. Wonder why he never rose above Col.?
