The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Robert Clark

If anyone has any feedback on this possible soldier it would be appreciated. As many of you know I've researching Camp Chase for many years.

I see a conscript named Robert Clark at fold 3 under miscellaneous on pages two and three. It said he was taken prisoner in Carroll County, Arkansas on October 13, 1864 and arrived at the prison in Alton, Illinois on December 3, 1864 and Alton noted he was taken prisoner in Carroll County, Arkansas. There are two Robert Clark's on miscellaneous and the other soldier was taken prisoner in Marion County, Arkansas and died in St. Louis in late 1863 and not the soldier in question.

From research on Chase they are perhaps half a dozen soldiers who have a Confederate tombstone but never existed. Also there are eight Union soldiers buried at Chase with Confederate tombstones. Needless to say Camp Chase has many mistakes.

The government reports a man named Robert Clark of Carroll County, Arkansas died at Camp Chase on February 20, 1865 and was buried in grave number 1351. However in looking over the graves from the Federal POW Records in numerical order grave number 1351 is missing. That is to say neither Robert Clark or anyone is buried in grave number 1351. The numbers are in perfect sequence with the exception of grave 1351.

Now back to the miscellaneous records. On page three it said that Robert Clark was transferred from Alton, Illinois to Point Lookout, Maryland on February 17, 1865 for exchange. I did notice where his name was cancelled. On page two it said he died of small-pox in St. Mary, Washington. I noticed that Point Lookout is in St. Mary's County, Maryland. In looking for his name at Point Lookout I did not see him.
