Re: Sevier County troops
In Response To: Sevier County troops ()

Mark, the following companies were recruited and organized in Sevier County --

Co. H, 5th Arkansas Regiment State Troops.
Co. G, 2nd Arkansas Regiment Mounted Rifles.
Cos. G & H, 12th Arkansas Regiment Infantry.
Cos. B, E, F & K, 19th (Dawson's) Arkansas Regiment Infantry.
Co. A, 24th Arkansas Regiment Infantry.
Co. A, Crawford's Battalion Arkansas Infantry.
Co. C, Pettus' Battalion Arkansas State Troops.
Co. K, 27th Texas Regiment Cavalry.

The militia regiment of Sevier County was the 37th Arkansas Regiment Militia.

Notes:

1. Pettus' Battalion Arkansas State Troops was expanded to a regiment and officially designated as the 3rd Regiment Arkansas State Cavalry, but was more commonly referred to as Newton's Regiment Arkansas Cavalry and the 10th Arkansas Regiment Mounted Volunteers, not to be confused with Crawford's 10th Arkansas Regiment Cavalry [ah, good old Arkansas unit designations]. Capt. Cyrus K. Holman's company retained its designation as Co. C after the reorganization.

2. Capt. William M. Wallis' company was assigned to the 27th Texas Regiment Cavalry as Co. K. Although originally recruited in Sevier County, it was greatly augmented with transfers from other regiments, notably stragglers from the 14th Arkansas Regiment Infantry.

3. The 3rd Arkansas Regiment Cavalry, U.S. Volunteers, cited in George's post, had no connection with Sevier County and as far as I can tell, had no Sevier County men in its ranks. Unlike Arkansas Confederate companies, Arkansas U.S. volunteer companies were not recruited on a county basis; they were instead recruited "at large". The 3rd Arkansas U.S. Cavalry was recruited primarily in Central Arkansas.
