I will have to check my notes on the names, if any. of men specifically that died a Camp Texas. I know that General Hindman ordered Col. Garland to establish a camp of Instruction at Benton (I.E. Camp Texas) based on his 6th Texas Infantry regiment.

The Camp Was supposedly established in June 1862 and located south of Benton on the Benton to Princeston/Pine Bluff road (generally Ar. Hwy 35 from Benton to Sheridan today). The 6th Texas had just arrived from Texas and Col. Garland had reported it presence to General Hindman who had just assumed command of the Department of Arkansas. General Standing orders was that such camps were to be located 5 to 10 miles from such settlements as Benton and as you know that Camp Texas was located near the Saline River for a water source.

I do not believe that they stayed there very long maybe two to three weeks as about the end of June they had moved to Rockport where at least a dozen to two dozen men were left sick with the measles. I believe that a couple of those men did die at Rockport and that the remaineder rejoined their regiment at Pine Bluff. The 6th then moved to White Sulphur Springs by July 1862 were it was encamped on the lower branch of the Bayou Bartholemew. Again Col. Garland was put in charge of a camp of instruction for the organization of dismounted Cavalry units (24th and 25th Texas Cavalry) as Infantry.

Supposedly the 6th Texas had a number of civilians, slaves, and free blacks that traveled with it acting as a medical unit.
