Often times the ranks given in Obituaries are often Honorary ranks given by United Confederate Veterans Organization. However in this case it may refer to his post War activities.

Also this "Artillery Company" may not have actually had "Artillery". It may have been comprized of men of his former association. It sounds like this Company may well have been a part of the local "Ku Klux Klan" or "Red Shirts" resistance organizations comprized of honorable discharged former Confederate veterans during the period of between 1865 and 1870.

Modern historians tend to paint these organizations with a Broad Brush, but that was not the case in every place. In fact the "Red Shirts", who were especially strong in Mississippi, adopted that form of identification in order to not be confused with other (both North and South) who hid their idenity during their activities.
