The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: How many
In Response To: How many ()

Damon, I did an actual count of soldiers in my database a few years ago, but I have no idea where that file is now. I posted the numbers on this board at that time, which generated an interesting discussion thread. You might be able to track it down in this board's archives.

As I recall (a tricky thing at my age) I cautioned researchers that my database, while probably the most comprehensive around, is not completely accurate due to several factors -- poor record keeping in the Trans-Mississippi Department being the most significant. Many units have no surviving records at all. This can be partially mitigated by postwar pension records, but only partially -- for example, Flippin's 1st Battalion Arkansas Reserve Cavalry, vintage 1864-65, had at least six companies, but the names of only a dozen or so men are known, mostly from pension records.

Another problem area is the number of Arkansans who served in regiments from other states. This necessitated a unit-by-unit search of likely regiments (Louisiana, Texas and Missouri regiments with companies from border areas), pension records, and "happy accidents" of research. This is still an ongoing research project, and I continue to come up with names. On the U.S. side, I'm finding more Arkansans in Union regiments than I expected -- mostly Missouri and Kansas regiments, with a sprinkling of men in Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin regiments.

And the struggle continues....
