Re: Arkansas Post and the Emancipation Proclaimati

A second part of this puzzle. General McClernard had just retuned from conference with Lincoln with Authority to raise additional troops which were in fact most of the Soldiers at Memphis that Sherman was using in his Yazoo Expedition the last week of Dec. 1862.

General McClernard and Lincoln were appearently close associates. So what were Lincoln's personal orders to McClernard? Surely Lincoln and McClernard had discussed how these new troops were to be used since they weren't originally intended for Grants Army but for McClernards use.

Many Historians credit McClernard with the Arkansas Post expedition, but some suggest that Sherman was in fact the one who suggested it. Was Arkansas Post an afterthought because of the need of an easy victory to support politically the implimentation of the Emancipation Proclaimation, after the failures of the previous month? After all The war was a "Political War". A war of appearences.
