The Petersburg Campaign Finally Gets its Due with a Plethora of New and Revised Books

The campaign to take Petersburg, the real key to taking Richmond, was also the longest single campaign of the Civil War. Fighting erupted at the city in June, 1864 and concluded in April 1865 with the breaking of the Confederate lines southwest of the city forcing Robert E. Lee’s army to leave the city. Seven days later, Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House ending the Civil War in the east. This campaign had not been as heavily covered as many other campaigns of the war over time but that is all changing with new works and revised classics covering many aspects of the Petersburg Campaign. Savas Beatie Publishing, of California, is releasing numerous books over the next few months to coincide with the 150th Anniversary of this pivotal event. These books include new works by Ed Bearss with Bryce Suderow in two volumes covering the entire campaign; the majestic and award winning Richmond Redeemed, long considered one of the finest battle histories of the war, now fully revised by Dr. Richard Sommers (retired from the U.S. Army War College and Heritage and Education Center); William G. Robertson’s (now retired from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College) revised First Battle For Petersburg; Noah Trudeau’s fine campaign overview, The Last Citadel; and John Horn’s revised The Battles for the Weldon Railroad. Earlier versions of some of these books are long out of print.
