The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Yes this is my man: My GGGGrandfather

James Ellison Foust (later called uncle Ell) son of John & Sarah Mayes Foust,
moved with his wife and with his wife's Father and Mother to the State of
Arkansas. They moved to what is now the north part of Cleburne County, in
the community of Macedonia, (near Drasco.)

James Ellison Foust couldn't accept the acts of slavery even though his
foreparents had owned slaves in North Carolina. He believed that all men
should be free, and that no one person should have the right to buy or sell
another. All his Civil War service was in the Missouri and Northern Arkansas
conflicts.

When the Civil War ended he returned to his home which is located four miles
east of Drasco, Arkansas. He built an old time water mill to grind corn meal,
and other reason's of power on what is call Big Creek, on this farm in Northern
Cleburne County, Arkansas.

He was reputed to be excellent hill farmer, who kept a two years supply of corn
on hand at all time, fat horses and plenty of meat.

James Ellison Foust, was appointed to a committee to chart a new County Road
for the new Cleburne County, from Tumbling shoals to Banner, Arkansas in 1883.
This is the year that Cleburne County, the youngest and last County to be formed
in the State of Arkansas. His wife Harriet Foust, was a midwife for the whole sur-
rounding community, many people knew her and would see her riding her side saddle
on a horse going some place to deliver, their babies.
