Re: Austin, Arkansas 1862 burials

There were several names for Camp Nelson over the years. Before the war and at the start of troops moving into the area, it was known as the "public grounds". Then as the army had a build up in the area along the stagecoach/mail route road. They expanded the camp greatly by clearing the trees for fire wood. The camp became known as Camp Hope, but there is confussion on this, as in some sources it is referred to as Camp Holmes or Camp Homes. And I'm not sure why, may have been a soldier not in the know confussing General Holmes last name, Holmes with Hope or it may have been called Camp Holmes for a short time. But after the soldiers began to dislike General Holmes the name may have been changed to Camp Hope. This is a gray area and I've not able to clear it up. Anyway General Nelson died October 7, 1862 and by October 14, 1862 the camp had been renamed in his honor as Camp Nelson. Any soldiers that are listed as dying at Camp Hope, I would say they died before October 14 and if they died after that date then they are probably listed at dying at Camp Nelson. I'm sure there may be some exceptions to this. Remember that most of the soldiers that came to Camp Nelson/Austin, Arkansas were strangers to the area and they may have referred to Austin as Camp Nelson and vice versa. Later in the war and after the war some soldiers that spent time at Camp Nelson reflect back to it as "Camp Death".
