According to Ed Bearss in his book "Steele's Retreat from Camden" in Chapter IV on page 90, paragraph 1, states that "many of the soldiers (Union) were only issued two pieces of Hardtack and 1/2 pint of cornmeal" to last them until they got to Little Rock.
