Hindman was an absolute miracle worker, along with John S. Roane who refused to go with Van Dorn and was left in charge of the State with nothing to defend it with.
Roane's shanghaing of Parson's 12 Texas Cavalry at Pine Bluff while Parson's himself was in Memphis to report his Regiment to Van Dorn. Along with Governor Rector's screaming to Richmond for help or he would seceed from the Confederacy as well as the United States. Where what bought enough time for Hindman to even get to Arkansas on the last day of May 1862.
The Confederates in Arkansas may have never have won a major victory in the State but they won the Campaign to force the Union Army into having to attack Little Rock from the north almost a year and a half later. THAT was astounding considering that had Curtis actually known the true situation he could have walked into Little Rock or Pine Bluff in May of 1862 and the State of Arkansas would have fallen without a shot being fired. Preventing that alone may have kept Louisiana and Texas in the Confederacy.
We do not fully understand the scope or the importance of those mens actions in the events of the summer of 1862 in Arkansas.
