Hart's Battery

I think I have put together a fairly complete time line for CPT Hart. One thing that is different than my previous understanding, Hart was back in Arkansas reorganizing his battery under Hindman, well before the Court of Inquiry that cleared several former members of his battery of misconduct at Pea Ridge:

* Late Spring of 1861, Organized at Dallas, Polk County, Arkansas.

* August 1, 1861, Enlisted in Confederate service at Fayetteville on

* January 1862, Assigned to Colonel Louis Herbert's 2nd Brigade, Colonel James McIntosh Division

* March 7–8, 1862, Battle of Pea Ridge (Elkhorn Tavern) in Benton County, Arkansas,

* March 17, 1862, Assigned to Brigadier General D. M. Frost's artillery brigade of Major General Sterling Price's Division.

* March 22, 1862, General Orders No. 10 disbanded the battery “for shameful conduct in the presence of the enemy.”

* May 9, 1862. Engagement at Farmington, Miss. Captain William Hart, Late of Hart’s Battery, desired and was permitted to act as gunner at one of the Howitzers, whre if report be true, he served with considerable effect” Report of Capt David Provence, Arkansas Battery.

If Col [Allison] Nelson is not at Deval's Bluff, Col Shoup will assume command there and adopt the best means practicable, for holding the place and resisting the progress of the Federal Gun Boats & transports up White River. Should Col Nelson be at that place, however, Col Shoup will report to him and remain there as his second in command. http://cdm.sos.mo.gov/cdm4/page_text.php?CISOROOT=/mack&CISOPTR=9260&CISOBOX=1&OBJ=9396&ITEM=22

* July 5th [1862] Genl. A. [Albert] Rust, Des Arc, Genl [Thomas] Hindman knows nothing of Worthington. Suppose him to be a spy. I judge from your dispatches that you yet have Hart's four guns with you though you have sent his and Browns companies to Devals [DeVall's] Bluff. Let me know at once if Hart took the guns to Devals Bluff. I must send Pratt there to get them He will be of no use to you without the guns. Genl. Hindman's dispatch sent you just now says Pratt was ordered to Devals Bluff. This was written under the impression that you had sent the guns there. Let me know without delay where the guns are. Pratts present orders are to go to Des Arc. If you have sent the guns off I will change the destination so that he can get the guns, and then join you at once. R. [Robert] C. Newton A.A.
