Re: Occupation of DuValls Bluff

Mr. Keever, in the Naval O.R. on August 15th, the gunboat Lexington coming down the White passed DeValls Bluff & landed at Clarendon, turning over some prisoners. If the Bluff was occupied they didn't mention it, I don't believe it was. On the 17th Steele with his combined force was preparing to cross the White at Clarendon. The White was crossed on the 18th. His men had to corduroy sections of road, so it wasn't an easy march. On the 23rd Steele was sending dispatches from DeValls Bluff, ordering his hospital & quartermaster stores up from Clarendon. I think DeValls Bluff was probably occupied on the 21st or 22nd. Davidson's report on the Little Rock campaign doesn't mention DeValls Bluff. Its odd that Steele didn't give a more exact date. I hope this is of some help...dave casto
