For some companies and regiments the records didn't get kept from the start...the following comments are from different companies of the 26th Arkansas:

Co. A - Since the organization of the company, no books have been furnished, and on account of the scarcity of stationary, it has been impossible to keep full records of all orders and details. Even now we have no company books and it is not possible to sustain them.

Co. C - Since the reorganization of the regiment, company books have never been furnished us, and often not even a sheaf of paper could be procured. Hence, it has been impossible to keep correctly the dates of discharge and details.

Co. E - Not having been furnished with sufficient company books, the correct dates of leave of absence, furloughs and details are very difficult to give correctly.

Co. G - Since the organization of the company, no books have been furnished the company officers and, owing to the great scarcity of stationary, it has been impossible to keep a correct and minute account of the company.
