What records that are available for Confederate soldiers in no way existed in a format similar to what we have today.

What records we have for these soldiers derive mainly from the information provided on their companies bi-monthly muster rolls held for pay purposes.

These records usually show date and place of enlistment, transfers, promotions, presence, status such as AWOL, furlough, sick, transfer, desertion, etc.

Upon completion of these musters, copies were forwarded to Army headquarters in Richmond where they were filed.

Unfortunately, many of these records were lost on the evacuation and sacking of Richmond at war's end.

For many regiments, and companies, few, if any muster rolls survived to be incorporated in the Compiled Service Records produced by the War Department around 1900.

For some units, records are fairly representative for the whole time of their service. However, for a good many, records for the last year of the war are missing.

As for Capt. Moore's Company, Adams Regiment, only one muster roll survived, that being their muster in roll. On this roll, Private Fair's presence was not stated. He may have attended, he may not. We have no way of knowing.

Since no further muster rolls are available, there are no further indications of his subsequent service.

August 11, 1862, Private Ambrose Fair, mustered in and enrolled at King R. Township, Madison, County, Ark.
Sept. 12, 1862, date of Muster in roll at Elm Spring, Washington, County, Ark.
Sept/Oct, 1862*, muster roll, missing
Dec. 7, 1862 Battle of Prairie Grove
The Regiment was disbanded after the battle of Prairie Grove, Ark., the officers mustered out and the men distributed among other organizations in General Cabell's command.
Nov/Dec, 1862, muster roll, missing

* These musters were generally held the last day of the period, i.e., Oct. 31. However, in many cases because of the situation, they may have been held later, in many cases, months later.
