The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Hoadley's Battery for Danny

Damon and Danny -- A little tidbit to add to your files on Dismukes' Battery is the name of the original captain. He was a difficult man to research, because throughout his life he went by the moniker "Whit Harris" and moved around a lot. I finally identified him as Datus Whitaker Harris (1821-1905). As far as I can tell his only Civil War service was as the original captain of the "McCown Guards", organized at Lamartine, Arkansas, on December 6, 1861. He was succeeded as captain by First Lieut. Paul Thomas Dismukes, date uncertain. The battery was comprised mostly of men from Columbia and Lafayette counties. Captain Harris subsequently moved to Louisiana, but died in Texas.
