Yes, there was a Petersburg, Arkansas. My Great Grandfather Frederick Amos Switzer (1828--1908) moved to the western portion of Ashley County, within three miles of the Ouachita River, in or about 1859--with his wife Julia Drummond Switzer. The community of Petersburg grew up around the home they built and that of the Ramseurs, who settled there about the same time. Both the Ramseurs and Switzers established substantial farming operatins of cotton, soybeans and corn--shipping the crops out at a landing they built on the Ouachita for "pick-up" by the stern wheelers of the era thatplied the River on up to Camden at the time. F.A. also developed the Sulphur Springs water works and resort two miles away--somewhat closer to the River. There is a Petersburg Trail still today that goes by where tht town once stood--but there is nothing left. About a mile away from there to the north lies the Macedonian Cemetery where F.A., Julia and my Dad, Frank Mays Switzer are buried. I have an envelope postage meter stamped Bastrop, La. from F.A. addressed to my great Grandmother Julia at Petersburg, Arkansas.
