First, a letter, (6-3-1911) is included in his widow’s pension from the Adjutant General, War Dpt. to U.S. Representative Ben Cravens which reads:
“RECORDS dated in August and November, 1864, show him (J. C. Moles) as lieutenant colonel, Polk’s Regiment, Arkansas Cavalry.”
What Records? Certainly there must be an original report, letter, receipt, etc. from Aug and Nov 1864 that mentions Lt. Col. Moles, and I’d love to study it! (This also implies that Cocke’s infantry regiment became cavalry by Aug. 64.)
Second, on Gerdes website under “Gipson’s Battalion Mounted Rifles,” in which J. C. Moles is listed, it reads:
“These records came almost entirely from records of receipts for forage.”
Second Question: What Records of receipts for forage? I’d love to know when and where this forage took place, the items and value of the forage and everything pertaining to these receipts. Moles was part of Gipson's Battlion from 7-20-1862 to 9-16-1862, so the receipts were from that period.
If you know where/how to access either answer, I’d be much obliged. Thanks.
