In Response To: Worsham Avengers ()

I would certainly defer to Byan Howerton or Doyle Taylor on this subject but as I have four ancestors in this company I will take a stab at it: From a post on this site frome Byran Howerton dated October 13, 2004 - "Capt. James Johnsons Co. A 19th (Dockery's) Arkansas Infantry was named the 'Worsham Avengers'. "A company was organized at Lewisville, Lafayette county, on last Tuesday, called the 'Worsham Avengers'- a just tribute to one of the first volunteers from that county, who fell at Oak Hills. James G. Johnson was elected;" The same article mentions Capt. Inabnetts Co. C, 20th Arkansas as raising that company with no mention of a nickname. Washington Telegraph March 5, 1862. To paraphrase a June 14, 2003 post by Keenan Williams - George Worsham was a member of the Hemptead Rifles (Co. C, 20th Ark. was from Hemptead county). Daniel Jones of the Hempstead rifles along with a portion of the rifles presided at the funeral and Col. Jones was later Col. of the 20th. I can't seem to lay my hands on it but I seem to remember that George Worsham's ( brother ?) later became a member of Co. C and they "claimed" the nickname for the company when he joined. Probably both companies laid claim to the nickname Co. A 19th, early, and later Co. C 20th and Co. C laid claim to it by "blood" and geographical ties as well as general usage.
