Willis, age 22, resident of Dade County, enrolled as a Private in Company A, 3rd Missouri Cavalry* September 12, 1862 in Newton County, Missouri, promoted 2nd Lieutenant two days later, taken prisoner at Springfield, Missouri January 8, 1863, granted leave of absence of 30 days on February 18, 1864, promoted 1st Lieutenant March 4, 1864, promoted Captain, n.d., surrendered with the Army of the Trans-Mississipi, paroled at Shreveport, Louisiana June 15, 1865

John Willis enlisted as a Private in Company A, 3rd Missouri Cavalry* September 13, 1862 in Newton County, Missouri, last recorded present on the Jan & Feby, 1863 muster roll, he is dropped from the rolls sometime in the next 12 months, either from resignation, desertion, disability, death, etc., however, the next five muster rolls which would have recorded his fate, did not survive to be incorporated in these records

* This regiment appears to have been variously known on the field as 3rd Regiment, Shelby's Brigade; Smith's Regiment, Missouri Cavalry; Thompson's REgiment, Missouri Cavalry; and Hooper's Regiment Cavalry; but it was designated by the Confederate War Department as the 6th Regiment Missouri Cavalry
