John Burns

Family story says my gr..grandfather, John Burns, b. Ireland, drove a supply wagon for the quartermaster between Ft Smith and Ft. Gibson and that he was killed while on a delivery. He was supposedly buried at the Nat'l Cemetery at Ft Gibson. I have since found that this cemetery was established several years after the war and many of the soldiers who were moved there no longer had ID information. There is no John Burns by name on their listings. John's son was born in Arkansas in 1862, so my guess is he was enlisted from Arkansas. I have only found one record on ancestry.com for John Burns from Arkansas, but he is listed as a sargeant with the Mounted Cherokee, so not sure this was him. Any ideas for a continued search?
