2nd Reg. Ark. Cav. Co. D

I am trying to locate information on Co D (Jefferson Co.) of the 2nd Regiment, Ark Cavalry and a roster.

My Great Grandfather, James Samuel McClellan(McClelland) served as a private. I do not have his enlistment date but he was captured in Bradley County on April 6, 1864 and transfered to the Military Prison in Little Rock by April 13. From Little Rock he was sent to Rock Island Barracks, Ill. arriving May 17, 1864. His papers state that he did not want to be exchanged. On papers dated Jan. 17, 1865, he is listed on a "Roll of Prisoners of War at Rock Island Barracks, Ill., transferred to Maj. Gen. Canby, Comd'g West Division of the Mississippi for exchange."

He then appears on a register of Prisoners of War at New Orleans, La. dated Jan. 29, 1865. Next he appears on a roll of "Prisoners of War transferred from New Orleans, La. and exchanged at red River Landing, La., March 4, 1865, by Col. C. C. Dwight, Commissioner of Exchange, under the cartel of July 28, 1864."

James Samuel McClellan was born Nov. 13, 1834 in Abbeville, South Carolina and died March 3, 1930 in Cleveland Co., Ark.
