One other little tidbit, when then CPT Geoghegan and his company were marching through Benton in mid 1862 towards LIttle Rock, the ladies in town presented the company with a fine flag. One of the soldiers, a Pvt Parham, who later taught school in Benton mentioned the episode and said they carried the flag until its capture at Helena. The State of Iowa has two flags attributed to the 37th Ark captured in front of Battery D but neither was a 1st National...one a Polk variant and the other a 2nd National that had probably been pretty recently issued. However, they do have one 1st National but there is question as to where it was taken. On one of the stars it gives the date as July 4th and the only place that could occur was Vicksburg or Helena. Iowa claims they feel it was that of the 21st ARk taken in May at Big Black by 23rd Iowa, but the date etc may point to Helena. The late Howie Maddeus very intently studied the faded letters on the star and felt it could have been taken at Helena by 33rd Iowa but with no add'l info it will probably remain as unidentified.
