I agree with what you say. In my own family, my great grandfather Frank Mahan of Kentucky (a state that did not secede) joined the 2nd Kentucky Confederate Cavalry and later got a Confederate veteran pension in 1910 from the state of Arkansas. But on the other side of my family my great great grandfather Sion Brown (born in North Carolina, married in Georgia, lived in Alabama and then Arkansas) joined the 4th Arkansas Union Cavalry. He was absolutely not a Yankee; he was a Southern Unionist. There were many Southern Unionists in Arkansas and elsewhere, and it took real courage to take that stand. I am equally proud to claim both heritages.

On another note, I have written two other books. One is The Battle of Fayetteville, which is similar to the First Arkansas book. It is about 57 pages and is an expansion of the chapter in the regiment book about the battle. Also, I later wrote another book (150+ pages) called Fayetteville Arkansas in the Civil War and has a great many photographs and illustrations. It includes both subjects (the regiment and the battle) and chronicles the fate of the town during the course of the war. Both are available at the Washington County Historical Society in Fayetteville, or at headquartershouse.org.
