My 2nd great grandfather was a Sergeant in the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry Regiment Union and got a special promotion to "C.S. Sergeant".

I have been told that it meant Color Sergeant or Commissary Sergeant, and don't know which one it is. The promotion stated "Promoted by special order #24, dated head qtrs 3rd Ark. Cav. March 27, 1865".

In Dec. of 1864 he was listed as 1st Duty Sergeant. I don't know if that meant he was a true 1st Sergeant or not.
