Re: John Allen Campbell 4th Arkansas Union Cavalry

Shirley, the problem you had is that John A. Campbell served in the 1st, not the 4th, Arkansas Union Cavalry, and enlisted in 1862, not 1863.

He enlisted in Co. E, 1st Arkansas Cavalry, U.S. Volunteers, at Cassville, Missouri, on August 15, 1862; age 24, born in Perry County Tennessee. He was mustered into service on August 25, 1862, for a term of three years, and was mustered out with his regiment at Fort Smith, Arkansas, on August 23, 1865. He was a resident of Franklin County, Arkansas. He applied for a U.S. veteran's pension in 1890. According to the pension index, he died at Harmony, Arkansas, on May 9, 1918, after which his widow, Mrs. Margaret E. Campbell, applied for a pension.

The 4th Arkansas Cavalry, U.S. Volunteers, didn't begin organizing until the winter of 1863. There was a James A. Campbell in this regiment, along with Jarrett M. Campbell and Montgomery O. Campbell. These were Clark County men, two born in Alabama and one in Arkansas.

You can order a copy of John A. Campbell's compiled service record in the 1st Arkansas Cavalry by clicking on the white banner at the top of this page.
