George L. Davis enlisted in Co. K, 3rd Arkansas Cavalry, U.S. Volunteers, at Wiley’s Cove, Arkansas, on February 1, 1864, and was mustered into service on February 8, 1864, for a period of three years. He was discharged for disability on a surgeon’s certificate at Lewisburg, Arkansas, on May 23, 1865. The company muster-in roll describes him as a farmer, age 45, born in Knox County, Tennessee, blue eyes, gray hair, fair complexion, height 5'8". He applied for a U.S. veteran's pension in 1882.

At the beginning of the war he had been a member of the Searcy County Militia. He appears on a roll of members of Co. F, 45th Regiment Arkansas Militia, who were called to active service at Burrowville, Arkansas, for the period November 26 to December 20, 1861. The 45th Militia had been called out to track down and arrest suspected Union loyalists in north central Arkansas.
