Yes, luckily for Crawford he had a nucleus of committed fellow Saline Countians to build his force around initially, even though the first campaign had lots of desertions from his other companies, in spring/summer 1863. THen when his regiment was officially raised in late 1863, he had some better companies assigned to him that were of better quality.
